Refined CD case research

Drake’s Digipak:
The front of this CD has no text apart from the products information going around the edge of the CD, which is a common feature on many CD's.

The Cd and casing of the Cd are all relatable as the image is the same, this allows people to recognise it. This starts to make it a popular image which is associated with the artist which means he does not need his name to be big as you can see it is a small print in the corner as people can recognise him by the image as it has become iconic for Drake.

Using the same image is successful for Drake as it has become his promotion for his whole tour, however, we don’t want the image to be the same on the cd as that image will already feature on the poster. Therefore, we would rather all of the images relate and lead on from each other rather than repeat.
For example if we have smoke on the front of the CD and a candle on the inside Pamphlet then we could use flames or smoke on the front of our actual CD. This relates to this Drake research as it is related like his but without repeating images as we wouldn’t want it to look like we had run out of ideas.

A mix of similar cd’s:

These Cd’s do not use images and just include artists name and album title and then some information round the edge of the Cd such as track listings and co producers. I link these designs because they are simple yet fit to the tone of the artists music.

The Cd's are not overcrowded and the simplistic design actually benefits them. Ours will be similar to these in terms of the text as it will be minimum writing.

The colour is successful as two of them have used binary opposites, using white on black so that it stands out while making the Cd attractive. As the writing is the only feature therefore it makes us read it.

As shown by these examples black Cd’s with text on is quite common therefore we might change ours slightly to incorporate a feature which links to the whole album. It will not be too intricate as we want the text to stand out therefore it might be a small design like the Jay z CD with the lines on.

Kanye Wests digipak:

This Cd relates to the album cover as it is the same bear that is on the album. This is how I see our product being created as the CD relates to the album without copying the image completely. It successfully links the whole album as it has constant variables throughout such as the colour tones and the main image.

I like this Cd as it is simple and clear to people what it is and why it is there which is something we will aim for as we want our images to link to each other so that it is evident as to why they have been used.

By not changing the colour scheme this keeps a variable the same which ensures the digipak all relates and matches, ensuring people recognise it as they can relate them through the colour or the image used (the bear).

The Cd only has the artists name and album title on it, this is bare as the album is also, therefore they both fit. Ours will be similar to this as I feel Cd’s look better bare, nevertheless, I might include some of the logos found on the Cd’s that use just writing on them as this makes them look professional when they incorporate the signs that people relate to cd’s.

Ukiyo Live Digipak:

This CD relates to our idea as we have the theme of fire with the use of candles and the image here on the CD portrays this well, the way it carries on when the cd is taken out shows continuity as it is clearly related to the album therefore it is fitting.

The image is successful as it is bold and stands out yet doesn’t make the text hard to read. The cd uses mainly a black background therefore the only colour is coming from the image, the orange and black contrast completely therefore it stands out as it is bold.

Ours will be similar to this as we use candles and flames/smoke in our music video and digipak therefore this cd will be our main influence as it uses a similar design to our plan.

The colours relate to the whole album as the front and sides are black and orange/red which relates to the flames. This shows how there is a clear colour scheme which works well as it is carried on throughout the album.
